Today, combating climate change is everyone’s responsibility and a benchmark for customers and markets. We aspire to become a global company that spearheads the fight against climate change through our goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. We will create unprecedented technologies and cut carbon emissions in the supply chains of all our businesses.

Reduce
Refrain from direct emissions
We research ways to convert fossil fuels into green energy, as well as to collect and use carbon to reduce direct emissions from our business sites. We also actively cooperate with partners to commercialize technologies for achieving carbon neutrality. Moreover, we replace fossil fuel-based materials with recycled materials and biomass so that no products will harm the environment, thereby ensuring the efficient use of resources and minimization of wasted resources.

Avoid
100% renewable energy
A move to renewable energy is one of the most representative carbon reduction solutions. In July 2020, we were the first in the Korea chemical industry to unveil our initiative to encourage 100% use of renewable energy, including wind power and solar energy, by 2050. We are striving to shift the energy of our global business sites toward renewable energy. We plan to shift to 100% renewable energy by 2030 in our overseas business sites and by 2050 in Korean business sites.

Compensate
Carbon offset projects
LG Chem compensates for the greenhouse gases (GHGs) inevitably emitted despite its efforts to cut direct and indirect emissions through a transition to renewable energy by investing in carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction activities. We will maximize the proportion of direct and indirect emissions while minimizing the proportion of carbon offset projects.

In 2021, LG Chem converted energy from domestic businesses into renewable energy through bidding for a green premium and achieved 100% renewable energy in battery material factories in China through the PPA method. The goal is to convert the energy consumed by all businesses into renewable energy by 2050.
