[Separator] A key material keeps the battery safer.

A battery operates by having lithium ions move between the cathode and the anode to generate current. However, when the cathode comes in contact with the anode, it leads to an explosion. This requires a permeable membrane that separates the cathode and anode plates and allows only lithium ions to pass freely. It is called the separator, one of the four major components of secondary batteries along with the anode, the cathode, and electrolytes.

Its core technology needs to ensure that the plates are separated while also allowing lithium ions to pass through steadily. The performance and lifespan of the battery depend on the quality of this technology. Separators are generally produced using polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP). Because batteries constantly send and receive electricity, they are prone to heating up. It is essential to strengthen the heat resistance so that the separator does not melt and cause accidents. We have the safety-reinforced separator (SRS) technology that enhances safety by thinly coating ceramics to reinforce the heat resistance of the separator.

LG Chem’s technology is inside every one of those safe batteries.
