Zippers are made of lucel, a type of high-performance engineering plastic. The thermoplastic material has an acetal or polyoxyethylene (POM) base that can be altered through changes in temperature. 

Lucel has high strength and rigidity, low water absorption, great wear resistance, high dimensional stability, and excellent machinability. Thanks to these physical properties, it is often used to produce complex parts that require sophisticated processing, such as valves, bed springs, loops, switches, and, yes, zippers.
