LG Chem Teams Up with SNU to Speed Up ‘Digital Transformation (DX)’
■ LG Chem - SNU holds MOU ceremony for the establishment of the DX Industry-Academic Cooperation Center
■ Search for projects to apply technologies such as deep learning and data mining for core areas such as production and quality
■ Operation of DX core personnel fostering education and industry-academic scholarship student programs
LG Chem will begin reinforcing its digital competence through joint research on artificial intelligence (AI) together with Seoul National University in order to lead the age of the fourth industrial revolution.
In regards to this, LG Chem announced that it held an MOU ceremony for the establishment of the ‘LG Chem-SNU DX Industry-Academic Cooperation Center’ by partnering up with the SNU College of Digital Engineering to strengthen its capacities in DX (Digital Transformation) on the 29th.
At the MOU signing ceremony held at the SNU College of Engineering in the morning with the attendance of LG Chem CHO (Chief Human Resources Officer) and Senior Vice President Kim Sung Min, Senior Vice President Jang Sung Hoon in charge of business innovation, Senior Vice President Hong Young Jun in charge of technology planning, Vice President Park Jin Yong in charge of DX, SNU College of Engineering Dean Cha Guk Heon, and College of Engineering Vice Dean Yoon Sung Ro.
LG Chem and SNU plans to construct an industry-academic cooperation infrastructure for DX and search for various DX projects, while also collaborating to reinforce its digital competitiveness by fostering outstanding human resources who will lead digital innovation, etc.
LG Chem and SNU agreed to cooperate in the three fields of ▲pursuing DX industry-academic cooperation projects, ▲ providing education to foster core personnel in DX, and ▲ and to operate industry-academic scholarship student programs.
LG Chem and SNU plans to find and carry out key joint projects that can be applied in digital technologies such as deep learning and data mining in crucial fields such as production, quality, R&D and marketing. They plan to search for and select candidate projects by August, execute the project for about a year, and then search for follow-up projects.
Plans are to provide education to incubate DX core personnel for LG Chem employees at the ‘LG Chem-SNU DX Industry-Academic Cooperation System’. A spokesperson for LG Chem stated, “We will reinforce our DX capacities by fostering personnel who can develop core technologies of the 4th industrial revolution such as AI and big data, as well as related products.”
LG Chem also plans to operate an industry-academic scholarship student program for master’s degrees and PhDs to cultivate future talents for the digital sector, while strengthening its industrial competitiveness.
The ‘LG Chem-SNU DX Industry-Academic Cooperation Center’ is scheduled to be operated by the SNU College of Engineering from August.
LG Chem CHO and Senior Vice President Kim Sung Min said, “LG Chem is focusing on elevating its digital capacities to stay in pace with the age of the fourth industrial revolution and the worldwide trend of digital transformation,” while adding, “We will concentrate on constructing a digital ecosystem through industry-academic cooperation with SNU.”
Vice President Park Jin Yong who is leading the DX (Digital Transformation) organization stated, “LG Chem is increasingly applying machine-learning based analytics & optimization in various work areas including MI (Material Informatics) as well as preventive maintenance for facilities, process optimization, smart manufacturing, development of new materials, and development of new medicinal substances.” He also added, “Cooperation with SNU during the course of this is meaningful in that exploration of new approach methods and problem-solving methods based on the latest technologies/techniques will be created jointly.”
SNU College of Engineering Dean Cha Guk Heon explained, “Digital transformation based on AI and big data has gone beyond the scope of information technology and has spread throughout all industries including manufacturing, and it has quickly become an essential component for strengthening competitiveness. This is quite significant in that we have created an opportunity for great mutual development for both of our institutes through cooperation in DX between LG Chem and SNU that possesses global competitiveness in this field, and that this will build the cornerstone to contribute at a national scale.”
Meanwhile, LG Chem announced earlier this year that it will assertively utilize DX to improve efficiency throughout all of its business sectors. LG Chem established a DX organization this year to establish a company-wide vision and pursuance system for DX in order to become an innovative company that leads digital trends, and it is currently searching for and implementing innovation projects that integrate DX in all of its business sectors.
