Product Functions and Structure
Cathode materials are responsible for the cathode (+) in batteries. In lithium-ion batteries, they play a critical role in storing and releasing lithium ions during charging and discharging processes. Composed primarily of lithium and metal oxides, cathode materials have a direct impact on the energy density, power output, lifespan, and stability of batteries across various applications, including electric vehicles (EVs) and energy storage systems (ESS).
LG Chem Cathode Materials Portfolio
Cathode materials are widely categorized into types such as NCM, NCA, NCMA, and LFP based on their composition.
LG Chem is actively developing differentiated cathode materials, including high-capacity high-nickel, high-voltage mid-nickel, and precursor-free cathode materials, to enhance battery performance and support a sustainable future.
1. High-Capacity High-Nickel Cathode Materials
LG Chem's high-nickel cathode materials feature a nickel content of over 80% while reducing the proportion of costly cobalt. Leveraging its advanced cathode material technology, LG Chem became the first in Korea to mass-produce single-particle high-nickel cathode materials in 2023, demonstrating its leadership in cathode material innovation.
2.High-Voltage Mid-Nickel Cathode Materials
High-voltage mid-nickel cathode materials, such as NCM(A), feature a nickel content of 40–60% and are designed to improve battery energy density by operating at higher voltages. Leveraging advanced single-particle technology, LG Chem is developing high-voltage mid-nickel cathode materials capable of achieving high energy density, with plans for customer delivery by 2026.
3. Precursor-Free Cathode Materials
Precursor-free technology eliminates the need for precursor processes, which are known to have significant environmental impacts such as carbon emissions and wastewater generation. Based on this innovative technology, LG Chem aims to commercialize advanced cathode materials that improve upon traditional cathode supply chains.
LG Chem's Cathode Material Production Plan (By 2030)
LG Chem plans to expand its production capacity to 360,000 tons per year, focusing on facilities in Korea and the United States, to meet growing customer demand.
